To understand what is at stake in contemporary art, in aesthetic as well as political terms, one must begin with the theories put forward by the pope of modernism, Clement Greenberg. His seminal book Art and Culture (1961) should be read in its entirety in order to grasp the significance of art in capitalist society.
We will read closely two essay from this volume, carefully setting them against their historical context and tracing their origins. Please go through the first text prior to the meeting.
