Please read and download here the second to last “scene” of the 14 which make up Aisthesis: Scenes from the Aesthetic Regime of Art by Jacques Rancière (2013, Verso Publishing). The chapter deals with Dziga Vertov’s aesthetics and the critique Sergei Eisenstein, among others, brought to it. The text is just 18 pages long, but quite dense. It should be the starting point for a discussion about the possibility of an engaged art and the ways in which one can surpass the concept of the autonomy of the aesthetic.

Marius-Bogdan Tudor graduated in 2008 from the Foreign Language department of the University of Bucharest, specialized in English & Dutch, then received his MA in American Cultural Studies from the same university. After one year of teaching English and Dutch at language schools in Bucharest, he goes on to do a second MA in the History of Central and Eastern Europe at the Central European University in Budapest, with a thesis entitled “Instances of the ‘popular-democrat’ Romanian state at the 1 Mai factory in Ploiești (1948-1953): ideology and practices”. He is currently a Ph.D. researcher at the same institution, with a project about representations of recent history in independent theatre in Romania. He remains insterested in Romanian social history from the 20th C. and work relations in state socialism, state capitalism and “free market” capitalism, as well as in the history of arts and science. He coordinates Gazeta de Artă Politică and is a contributor to Chalbert magazine.

Capitolul tratează estetica lui Dziga Vertov și criticile aduse de Serghei Eisenstein, printre alți. Textul nu este foarte lung, 18 pagini, dar este destul de dens. Aș vrea ca de la el să pornim o discuție despre posibilitatea artei angajate și modalitățile prin care se poate depăși conceptul de autonomie a esteticului.

Marius-Bogdan Tudor a absolvit în 2008 Facultatea de Limbi şi Literaturi Străine la Universitatea Bucureşti, secţia Engleză – Neerlandeză, urmată de un masterat de Studii Culturale Americane la aceeaşi facultate. După un an de predat engleza şi neerlandeza la centre de limbi străine în Bucureşti, face un al doilea masterat – Istorie a Europei Centrale şi de Est – la Central European University în Budapesta, absolvit cu teza “Ipostaze ale statului ‘democrat-popular’ român în Uzina 1 Mai din Ploieşti (1948-1953): Ideologie şi practici.” În prezent este doctorand la UBB Cluj, cu un proiect despre reprezentări ale istorie recente în teatrul independent din România. Interesat în continuare de istoria socială a României în secolul XX şi de relaţii de muncă în socialismul de stat, capitalismul de stat şi capitalismul “pieţei libere,” precum și de istoria artelor și științelor. Coordonator al Gazetei de artă politică și colaborator al revistei Chalbert.
