ODD NIGHTS proudly presents an unusual event with Makunouchi Bento and Selfmademusic live-performing the music of Bodrog.

Bodrog is a work in progress DIY no-budget almost-horror mokumentary set in the sinister village of Bodrogu Vechi (Old Bodrog). The movie follows a group of washed-out artists joining an art residency in Bodrogu Vechi, only to discover something hidden in the village’s history. This film uses a non-traditional formula of telling a story by combining documentary style shooting with regular filmmaking blocking, self-conscious subtitles (which are mocking the movie in real time, similar to the Mystery Science Theatre 3000) and experimental music composed by Makunouchi Bento.

We invite you to enjoy this live performance based on the movie’s soundtrack by Makunouchi Bento, also featuring some originally, unreleased music by the film director, Selfmademusic. A mixture between the original soundtrack, initial music created by the director and some moments of live improvisation with experimental ambient.

Alongside the live performance, a montage with a number of unreleased scenes from the Bodrog movie (footage that will not make the film’s final cut) will be exclusively projected during the show.

The Makunouchi Bento, or traditional Japanese lunchbox, is a highly lacquered wooden box divided into quadrants, each of which contains different delicacies. It is also one of the most familiar images of Japan’s domestic environment. Reading the box as both an object and a metaphor, Felix Petrescu (Waka X) and Valentin Toma (Toma Carnagiu, fka Qewza) gave birth to this cinematic / experimental / electroacoustic project back in 2001. Their discography consists of 3 albums and 35 EPs and singles released on prestigious netlabels, songs featured on more than 40 compilations, collaborations with artists such as Selfmademusic, Silent Strike, Daniel Dorobanţu, Nagz, Kaneel, Tao, Adapt, Autorotation, Ben Mono, and many others. After the live rescoring of 3 films and 2 documentaries, plus a videogame soundtrack, they’re now busy writing original music for Mihai Sãlãjan’s first feature film, Bodrog.

Mihai Sãlãjan/Selfmademusic started as an experimental music producer and a comic-book artist and for a few years he worked on improving himself in these fields. Slowly but steadily, he started focusing on his very first love since he was a child: filmmaking. He independently began the making of his first feature film: Bodrog, a Romanian horror-comedy set in an almost forgotten village. Meanwhile, he met by chance some local young filmmakers who all had in mind one thing: to restore the local interest of the people regarding films. In other words, they all began a small movement to promote alternative, independent, underground movies to the local public and some of them start producing and directing shorts as well. Mihai decided to team up with a few people who shared his vision and after a few months, Libelula was born.
